CROWNS AND BRIDGES
Why do you need a dental crown?
To protect a weak tooth (for instance, from decay) from breaking or to hold together parts of a cracked tooth
To restore an already broken tooth or a tooth that has been severely worn down
To cover misshaped or severely discolored teeth
To cover a tooth that’s been treated with a root canal
Types of crowns
1. Metals - Metal crowns withstand biting and chewing forces well and probably last the longest in terms of wear down. Also, metal rarely chip or break. Metal crowns are a good choice for out-of-sight molars.
2. Porcelain-fused-to-metal - Dental crowns can be color matched to your adjacent teeth (unlike the metallic crowns). However, sometimes the metal underlying the crown's porcelain can show through as a dark line, especially at the gum line.
3. All-ceramic or all-porcelain - Dental crowns provide better natural color match than any other crown type and may be more suitable for people with metal allergies. All-ceramic crowns can be used for front and back teeth.
What is a dental bridge ?
A bridge is typically made of crowns on either side of the missing tooth or teeth supporting the pontic (false tooth) and is cemented in place. Dental bridges can help if you have a missing tooth or teeth.
