Fluoride Treatment
What Is Fluoride Varnish?
Fluoride varnish is a dental treatment that helps prevent tooth decay, slow its progression, and stop it from worsening. It is made with fluoride, a mineral that strengthens tooth enamel (the outer coating of the teeth).
Keep in mind that fluoride varnish cannot completely prevent cavities. It works best when combined with proper oral care, including brushing with the correct amount of fluoride toothpaste, flossing regularly, attending routine dental check-ups, and maintaining a healthy diet.
Is Fluoride Varnish Safe?
Fluoride varnish is safe and widely used by dentists and doctors around the world to help prevent tooth decay in children. Only a small amount is applied, and very little fluoride is swallowed. It is quickly applied and hardens on contact, then is brushed off after 4 to 12 hours.
Some brands of fluoride varnish may make teeth appear slightly yellow, while others may make them look dull. However, the color will return to normal once the varnish is brushed off. Most children find the taste pleasant.
How Is Fluoride Varnish Applied to the Teeth?
Fluoride varnish is painted onto the top and sides of each tooth using a small brush. It is sticky at first, but hardens when it comes into contact with saliva. Your child may feel the hardened varnish with their tongue, but will not be able to lick it off.
The application is painless. However, some young children may cry before or during the procedure. Fortunately, the process only takes a few minutes. In fact, it may be easier to apply the varnish when a child is crying, as their mouth will be slightly open.
You may be asked to hold your child in your lap while sitting knee-to-knee with the person applying the varnish.
How Do I Care for My Child’s Teeth After Fluoride Varnish Is Applied?
Here are some general guidelines for caring for your child’s teeth after fluoride varnish application. Always check with your child’s doctor for any additional instructions.
Your child can eat and drink immediately after the varnish is applied
Provide only soft foods and cold or warm (not hot) food and drinks
Do not brush or floss your child’s teeth for at least 4 to 6 hours
Remind your child to spit when rinsing, if they know how to do so
